Brief Counselling

Brief person-centred counselling… what is it?

Counselling is a professional relationship between two people which is focussed on the client’s hopes, concerns, problems and opportunities. Confidentiality forms part of an agreed contract, which is typically six to ten sessions, including the first session and review. There is an option to extend the original contract if psychotherapy over a longer period is required or requested.

Areas of work offered by our senior counsellor include:

  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Work problems

Senior Counsellor: Anne Brockbank who has 25 years’ experience as a counselor, is accredited by the BACP and is professionally insured.

Our approach

Our person-centred approach begins from our belief that we can be of most help to clients by enabling them to find their own solutions to problems or opportunities. Our approach to brief counselling draws on Carl Rogers and is known as the person-centred approach, for two reasons. The necessity for a real relationship between counselor and client, and the need for counsellor qualities which emphasise the dignity of the individual, the importance of personal choice and the significance of personal responsibility for development.

What are these qualities?

  1. Congruence: the counsellor is able to self disclose comfortably and is willing to be in relationship with her client.
  2. Positive Regard: a belief that the client can be trusted to take responsibility for their development and this means living with uncertainty
  3. Empathy: Emotional understanding which can be communicated to clients.
